tly learned about a great online resource while reading T.H.E. Journal for students in intermediate grades 4-6 called Kids’ Newsroom. This site, which was created by parents who were disappointed with the quality and safety of web sites for children, provides not only news articles and online activities but also a chance for students to respond to the articles they read. This site I would compare to an online and interactive version of Weekly Reader or Time for Kids. Articles cover a variety of topics and are written in kid-friendly language. This site also has an area of online games that are somewhat academic and free of pop-up and tons of advertising. I would think this would be a great site to take a class to when in the computer lab or if a roaming lab were in their own classroom. If you have been there before and wish to share your opinion, please do. Or, if you know of similar sites, please share them with your response.

Working With Wikis

Edublogs has recently given its members a free WikiSpace. I spent some time with my wiki space and am at a loss for how to edit it. Does anyone have some experience with this that might help me out as this is my maiden voyage into the world of Wikis?
Here is the link to my Wiki.
It’s All Political?

Last night my wife called my attention to a local school board meeting that was being aired on television. The topic of discussion was the possible purchase of the three and four year-old iBooks from the State at a cost of $48 each. My wife quickly wished she had not told me about the broadcast meeting because it was about 9:30 PM and she realized that I would get all rilied(sp?) up and might lose some sleep.
Watching these kind of meetings is a lesson in frustration for me for a number or reasons ranging from the lack of planning and forethought by the technology coordinator in preparing for this meeting to the lack of publicity within the school department that this meeting was even taking place so that all stake-holders in the topic could take part and voice ther opinion or provide data that would be helpful to the school board. But the thing that struck me that made me want to pull my hair out was when a school board member implied that the only reason we have the iBooks was because former Governor King was “legacy shopping” and that MLTI was all political. My response is, political or not, SO WHAT?!
MLTI has not been perfectly unleashed, I think partly because nowhere in the history of the world has there been such a large deployment of computers and network infrastructure placed into middle schools. For all its imperfections though, it has produced a tremendous amount of good. Attendance is up in Maine middle schools. There has been a decrease in the discipline problems as well. But most importantly, students are more highly motivated in finding, learning, and displaying content when using technology than when using a textbook. Teachers are improving their delivery of content and are able to manage their classroom data more efficiently. Now, I am very passionate when it comes to educational technology and not all people see it the way I do, but to that school board member who is concerned about Governor King having a “legacy” I say, “Why is that a problem?” MLTI did not turn out the way he originally wanted it to but there are many more positives that came out of it. Students are not only more computer literate than they were before but they are happier about school and their education than ever before. How can you put a price on that? Just because a possible opportunity is politically motivated does not decrease the value of the opportunity. Take advantage of the opportunity at hand and extract all the positive learning that can take place from it. If someone gets political fame an fortune because of it, I say, “The more power to him/her.” Why dig in your heals and say no because of the politics involved? Is that what is motivating you to deprive students from such a positive tool that can be used to enhance their learning?

All is Right With the World

It has finally happened. On Monday, May 1st, the MSAD 61 school board approved my nomination to be the technology integrator for Crooked River Elementary School. This is a job I held for three years prior to my current position. For the past two years I have been the Computer Teacher for a local middle school. Yes, it does sound a little backwards to go from integrating technology to teaching technology as an isolated class. Needless to say, I am going to be a much happier person in late August since I will not be in a job that requires me to teach in a way that I have philisophical issues with.
I am so excited to be working with both teachers and their students in a supportive role again. I love sitting down with a teacher and working together to see how technology can play a part in their curriculum or classroom management. I can’t wait to be excited to go to work because each day will different than the day before. Not to mention, I will get to work with a staff and administration that is excited about technology and what it can do to enhance and improve learning of students.
So it is appropriate to say that I am on cloud nine to be going back to my job as a technology integration specialist.
Phone Call to School Office

This morning a fellow colleague emailed me a hilarious .mp3 file called, “Phone Call to School Office”. I assume he found this on david teiche’s blog. As a teacher who has worked in elementary and middle schools since 1991, I found this to be wicked funny. I particularly enjoyed #6 and #10.
